Our second go at honoring Players of the Week attracted 14 nominations, up from eight the first week. More important, this time we not only recognize the outstanding performance of one player in each of the South’s three conferences, we also turn the HockeyYall.com spotlight on a skater for an independent team.
He’s Bobby San, a Florida Atlantic forward. He stood tall in both of the Eagles’ victories over South Florida last weekend. He scored twice and set up two other goals in an 8-2 victory Oct. 23. The next night his goal tied the game at 1-1. Then he was the playmaker on the winner in sudden-death overtime.
The Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League’s Player of the Week is Kenny Haisfield of North Carolina. Kenny scored a hat trick in a 7-4 win over Virginia on Oct. 23. “He had a stellar game, with his endless energy,” says coach Earl Anderson, noting that the second-year forward deposited the puck in the Cavaliers’ net two more times but each was waived off.
Michael Dougherty stopped 56 of 59 shots in Salisbury’s 6-2 and 4-1 wins over No. 6-ranked Christopher Newport and No. 11 George Washington, respectively, to earn the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference’s Player of the Week honor. Dougherty didn’t surrender a single goal in all 14 of Salisbury’s shorthanded situations.
South Carolina’s Dylan Skarupa, our Player of the Week for the South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association, was “a force every time he was on the ice” during his team’s 4-2 loss to Georgia, according to coach Mark Cairns. He scored just once, but had numerous chances and “the puck was never far from his stick.”
Also nominated for Player of the Week were:
ACCHL – Andrew McGinnis and Nick Vukmarovich of Virginia Tech, and Charlie Walsh of Georgetown.
BRHC – Alex Winton, The Citadel; Phil Fusco, Loyola; Kevin Pecca, Catholic University; and Eric Kendall and Josh Trovato, Johnson & Wales.
SECHC – Aaron Gottfried, Georgia.
Independents – Jason Smith, South Florida.
